It's the Feb. 27 catch of the day for Matt Guerton. The International Falls native, who now resides in Arizona, caught this 31 1/2 inch walleye on Lake of the Woods. Guerton was at Lake of the Woods in celebration of Critter Nagurski’s bachelor party when he hooked into the lunker. He was using a Chubby darter with a chub head. He plans to have the fish mounted. Ironically, Guerton had offered to pay for a mount if anyone in the group he was fishing with caught a monster walleye. Guess he’ll be paying for his own mount.		Brad Hagen caught this 46-inch, 30 pound northern pike January 30 on Rainy Lake using a rod and reel.
Rainy Lake’s ice fishing season is in full swing with reports of big fish as well as keepers being caught. Penni Jensen holds up a 12-pound, 5-ounce walleye she caught on Sept. 2. It took 20 minutes to land the fish on 8-pound test fishing line. A week later, she caught two more walleye weighing more than 9 pounds. Richard Baron took first place at the annual Fall Sturgeon Contest at The Junction Saturday. Baron caught a 63 1/4 inch lake sturgeon and netted $1,100.		Jaydon Thompson, 10, gets a little help from his grandfather, Curtis Street, to hold up the 61-inch lake sturgeon he caught and released last month on the Rainy River. It took Thompson more than half an hour to reel in the big fish by himself. Note that the fish is longer than Thompson is tall. 10/09/09
Caden Hofstad, 7, with the help of his dad Darrin Hofstad, holds up the biggest fish he’s ever caught. The smallmouth bass, caught in Redgut Bay of Rainy Lake Aug. 29, weighed 3 pounds, 6 ounces. Hofstad, who is from Grand Rapids, is the grandson of Bob and Joan Milette, International Falls.		Cormorant Village conducted its third annual fishing tournament Sept. 5. The winners were all wives. The fish measured 35.5 inches and weighed 10.8 pounds. She caught it on a Northland Fireball jig with a minnow, on Rainy Lake’s Jackfish Bay.
Calvin McKay of International Falls caught this lunker walleye while fishing in last week’s Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship on the Ontario side of Rainy Lake. The fish measured 33 inches in length, with a girth of 22 inches. Because McKay was in a tournament, he was required to immediately release any species that were not bass. But he noted he would have released it any way, because he releases all the fish he catches. “I do it for the sport. I just love fishing,” he said. “A lot of guys live to catch that fish.” McKay will team with partner Chad Jonson to fish the International Falls Bass Championship Aug. 28 and 29. Mary Shoberg took this picture of her son, Chad Shoberg, with the walleye he caught July 18 on Rainy Lake. It was netted by his 4 year old son, Tyrel, while the family was on what Mary called a memorable outing. The fish measured 30 1/2 inches and will be mounted.
